The Menace That Is Dog Fouling! |
Clean up after your dogs Dog fouling is increasingly becoming a problem in the area. It is your responsibility to clean up after your dog. In response to concerns raised by local residents the PACT Panel would like to draw your attention to the following: • An estimated 4.5million dog owners allow their dogs to foul in public places. • Local authorities in the UK receive approximately 225,000 complaints about dog fouling every year. • Dog waste can cause Toxocara canis. This is a rare infection that carries a high risk of causing serious health problems, especially in young children. It can cause blindness in more serious cases. • The cost to the British taxpayer of clearing up after dogs is estimated to be around £2.3million a year. • Finally, it is an offence not to clean up after your dog. You could receive a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice. Further offences could then result in a court appearance and a fine of up to £1,000. We will be tackling dog fouling in a highly-visible way but be warned our uniformed partners may sometimes be less visible but at the same time just as igilant. They will deal with those offending robustly! |

PACT are proud to announce that we now have our own log'oed vehicle for the use of all PACT Partners. You will soon see the white Volkswagen Transporter bearing the PACT logo on it's sides driving about on the Ward and being used during our street corner meetings and other engagement methods. We still continue to run our regular monthly street corner meeting on the first Thursday of the month. We've moved location and are now situated on Somerford Road at the 'Top Shops' (opposite PC World) I know that the nights are now drawing in and the weather has not been particularly kind to us of late but please feel free to come and visit us. I extend this invite to all residents young or not so young! Recent exciting news on the Grange Ward is the birth of 'Junior PACT' at the Grange Comprehensive school. I hope to be in a position to provide further details on this soon. In the meantime you will be pleased to hear that the Safer Schools and Communities Team of Police Community Support Officers together with PACT service providers including Dorset Fire and Rescue, Christchurch Borough Council and Shaddows (Drug and Alcohol Abuse services) have been working hard in the borough. A recent day long input at the Grange Comprehensive school entitled the 'Blitz Project' saw the students take part in a number of workshops aimed at highlighting the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse together with the harm caused by it's associated anti social behaviour. The day began with a theatrical production based on a true story in which the mis-use of alcohol lead to wider implications effecting more than just those acting out the roles. 'Blitz' is an annual event and targets the relevant year group at each of the senior schools within the Christchurch area. Since its inception there has been a marked decrease in the levels of alcohol fuelled anti social behaviour involving young people. On a final note can I wish each and everyone of you a Safe and Happy Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year on behalf of all of your PACT service providers. |

We have just conducted our second of the published 'street corner' style of meeting that the PACT panel have agreed to run on the first Thursday of every month from now to the end of the year. Our current chosen location is on Somerford Road, Christchurch opposite the Total Service station. In the absence of any further suitable accomodation or offers we have been making use of the Dorset Police 150th Anniversary trailer but this is by no means ideal as it currently lacks basic facilities that would add to the comfort of those manning it for an extended period or indeed those members of the community attending. Should anyone have any suggestions or offers of help that may improve this situation or indeed any other venue suggestions then please do get in touch as your views are valuable to us and the continued success of the PACT process. So how have these community engagement sessions been going? Quiet would be an accurate word to describe things so far. It has to be said though that it is still early days and both the August and this months sessions have been hampered by inclement weather. On the positive side perhaps there are no 'burning' issues to relate with crime and Anti Social Behaviour levels being on the decrease? There are a number of ways that you can communicate with your Safer Neighbourhood Team or Community Service providers. You can contact them directly, send a message via this website or via Dorset Police Safer Neighbourhood Team pages on www.dorsetpolice.uk where you will find the contact telephone numbers for members of your SNT. Your SNT will soon be producing a newsletter and are looking for any article or good news story worthy of inclusion. Please contact us if you have any ideas, suggestions, crosswords, puzzles, competitions etc. |

Recent community engagement on the Ward took the form of a public meeting on Monday 30 March 2009 at the Children's Centre, Somerford Junior School in Draper Road. PACT panel members present included representatives from Christchurch Borough Council, local community groups and Dorset Police. There was a small turn out of local residents consisting in the main of our Road Wardens. These are members of the community just like you who are keen to get involved in Neighbourhood Management and play their part in gathering and feeding information to the respective agencies in an effort to improve the quality of life for those residing in the area. The priorities raised on the night included dog fouling, litter and inconsiderate parking. That said now that the nights are lighter and the weather warming up your Safer Neighbourhood Team will also be paying attention to alcohol fuelled anti social behaviour and under age drinking. Behaviour of this kind will not be tolerated in the borough of Christchurch and we will be doing all we can to reduce loutish behaviour of this kind. A plan of action to tackle all issues raised is underway and involves the participitation of all of your PACT partners working together. We are considering a street corner meeting as our next major community engagement. Details will be confirmed soonest. The date will be Monday 18 May 2009. Location to be confirmed. We are really keen to recruit some more Road Wardens, more 'eyes and ears in the community'. If you feel that you can offer valued help and support then please contact one of your service providers as above or contact the Grange Safer Neighbourhood Team on 01202 222222, 07825 521806 or by e-mail
