Since April this year, the Christchurch area has experienced an increase in crimes relating to thefts from , and deliberate damage to, unattended motor vehicles.

St Catherines Hill and Hurn are the areas worst affected in the North Christchurch neighbourhood area with some vehicles left unlocked overnight or with contents easily visible within the car. The beauty spot car parks in and around the Hurn area are also being targetted. We would urge residents to not only lock their vehicles overnight, whether parked on the street or in a driveway, but also to clear contents from the vehicle including the glove box and any other storage compartments. The community needs to make every effort to deter these thieves.

We would appeal to those residents in the St Catherine’s area to report any suspicious behaviour in their area, particularly during the evening or late at night and to use 999 if they believe a crime is likely to be committed or the circumstances are suspicious.
